Breathing Space

Hello & Welcome!

In order to help you prepare for Breathing Space we’ve put together a list of things to do, bring and think about. Please keep this page bookmarked so you can refer to it between now and July.

Things To Prepare

1. A Short Talk

In order to get to know everyone a little we would like you to prepare a short talk (maximum 15 mins) about yourself and some aspect of your work. This can be presented as a powerpoint or a series of jpgs or any way you wish.
This isn’t designed to be a life history or even a photographic history because 15 mins isn’t very long, it’s simply a brief introduction to each participant. So choose one, or at most two, projects / ideas that you would enjoy sharing with us and that will be perfect.
Please do time your talk before you come, presentations often take longer than anticipated and you will have a 15 min. scheduled time slot.

2. Information from you

We need some information from you ahead of the retreat, please complete THIS FORM when you have a moment but at the latest by May 1st.

Arrival & Departure

Paul and I won’t have access to Swinfield House until 5 pm on Friday afternoon and we will need some time to make everything perfect for your arrival. So, we would be delighted to welcome you between 6 and 6.30 pm on Fri 4th July.

Please do not arrive before 6pm, it’s not that we don’t love you, just that we will be busy getting everything ready for your stay.

The house must be vacated by 10.00 am on Friday 11th July.

Things to Bring

Your presentation – if you would like to send it to us ahead of time please do.

Any projects that you are currently working on that you would like some feedback.

We will be setting up a pop-up library so if you have any interesting photographic books that you would be happy to share please bring up to 3.

Remember that alcohol is not included, so if you would like wine or other alcoholic drinks at dinner please bring  some with you. There will be opportunities to replenish supplies throughout the week.

This retreat is very different to a workshop. Although you will be busy, there are no requirements to produce anything specific over the course of the week. Breathing Space is about giving you time to consider where you are on your photographic journey and what you need to progress. Some of you may want to spend  time photographing, others researching, thinking, experimenting or working on an existing or new project.  So bring whatever you think might be helpful for you.

If you do plan on bringing photographic equipment, here is a general list that may be helpful;

  • Camera
  • Lenses
  • Tripod and mount
  • Flashgun
  • CF/SD cards
  • Card reader
  • Chargers and batteries
  • Laptop and power supply
  • Outdoor clothing – check weather, it may be raining and / or cold so bring layers and waterproofs
  • Waterproofs for camera – plastic bag and elastic bands makes a perfect temporary cheap protection.
  • Comfortable outdoor shoes

There will be more communications from us as we get closer to the time, meanwhile please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.
