Photo: Lynne Fraser, Amateur Photographer of the Year
I was honoured and delighted to be one of the guest judges for the Amateur Photographer of the Year 2024 photography competition. And what a tough job it was! There were so many incredible images from such a wide range of disciplines, documentary, wildlife, travel, portraiture, sport, dance, still life and much beyond! The standard was so very high with some outstanding technical and creative skills on display. What I particularly loved was the imagination demonstrated by so many photographers who were thinking out of the box.
With 12,000 entries from over 2,200 photographers, this year’s Amateur Photographer of the Year competition was a tough contest to win. So huge congratulations to Scottish photographer Lynn Fraser for taking 1st place after 10 intense competitive rounds! Each category involved a different topic and included everything from landscape, portrait, architecture and black and white to the open category that I was involved with judging.
If I’m absolutely honest, and it’s just my way of thinking, I really enjoy seeing the kinds of pictures that I’ve never seen before. Something unique and extraordinary that will grab my attention. This image, from the Travel section, is quirky and humorous and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen an image quite like this ever!
In my opinion it’s possibly Lynne’s best!

Massive congratulations must also go to Lucy Monckton Stretton who stormed ahead of more than 1000 young photographers to win the title Young Amateur Photographer of the Year, 2024. Lucy actually came 1st in four of the 10 categories, Animal, Macro, Travel and Landscape. A truly outstanding performance!
This image is a winner for me, shot from such a fantastic angle the ordinary dog becomes transformed into a captivating extraordinary focal point. Well done Lucy!
